Things haven't exactly been great for Nintendo lately. During the first quarter this year, Nintendo has reported a loss of $97 Million, according to a report by Game Informer. At the same time last year, Nintendo had a positive net income of just under $85 Million, so this is an extreme downward shift. They haven't lost hope, however. Nintendo is still projecting a net income of $196 Million by year's end.
It's interesting to note that despite these numbers, Mario Kart 8 appears to have been an overwhelming success. Nintendo announced that they have sold 2.82 Million copies of the game worldwide, and when you do the math, it shows that about 42% of Wii U owners have it.
No doubt the imminent release of Smash Bros. will help boost the numbers for Nintendo, but one can only wait and see what will happen as the year progresses.
